A would-be countess, a cardinal, and a queen-the perfect cast of characters for a tale of love, betrayal, and trickery. When these characters interacted in 1780s France, it was no fairy tiffany jewelry. Rather, it became the notorious "Affair of the Necklace," one of the incidents that led to the French Revolution and the overthrow of the monarchy. Here's how:Jeanne de Valois, a penniless young woman who had learned her ancestry could be traced to the ancient royal house of Valois and had assumed the title of Countess de lu Motte, needed money to support the lifestyle to which she felt entitled. She devised a scheme to gain possession of a necklace the court jewelers had fashioned of 579 diamonds, but had been unable to convince King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette to pay its high price. The countess' plan was clever. She knew the queen loved jewelry. She also knew the high-ranking Cardinal de Rohan had been unsuccessful in his attempt to win the queen's favor. So, she connived to assure the cardinal that she was the queen's earrings. She even forged letters supposedly written by the queen to de Rohan that explained how the queen wanted the necklace but lacked the hinds to purchase it at the time.The scheme worked. The cardinal agreed to use his credit to buy the necklace. He then gave the prized ornument to a supposed royal messenger at the countess' house. Once in the countess' hands, the necklace did not remain intact for long. Rather than keep a low profile, she began selling individual gems to fund an extravagant lifestyle. Within a few months, the scandal broke.The cardinal, the countess, and a few others who were in on the scheme were arrested and brought to trial. The countess was sentenced to life imprisonment, but managed to escape nine months later. The cardinal was acquitted-further tarnishing the queen's reputation, as the court believed the cardinal and not the queen's declaration that she knew nothing of the incident. Thus, historians rightfully list the "Affair of the Necklace" as one of the contributing factors to the French Revolution.Rhode Island Novelty, of Cumberland, R.I., is recalling about 47,000 children's mood key rings because they contain high levels of lead. The recalled items have multi-colored pendants including hearts, moons, dolphins, dragonflies, stars and butterflies that hang from a black cord. "Mood Necklace" is printed on the necklace's packaging.They were sold at carnivals, amusement parks, family entertainment centers, and small discount stores nationwide, and through Rhode Island Novelty's Web site, www.rinovelty.com, from August 2005 through December 2006 for about $1. Consumers should immediately take this recalled jewelry away from children and return it to the store where purchased or to Rhode Island Novelty for a free replacement jewelry item.He told police the youths approached him in his car in the 600 block of Division Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. One of the youths pulled a gun on him and demanded his gold necklace. When he refused, one of the youths reached in and grabbed the necklace. As he drove away, he got shot.

Assistant State Attorney Kristen Over told the jury Tuesday that Sanabria saw Suarez walking near Himes and Sligh avenues and decided he wanted Suarez's tiffany jewelry.
